The Easy Way To Have A 1000HP V8

 Putting together a 1,000-horsepower monster engine is not the black art that used to be the purview of very few engine builders. A lot of knowledge is already available on building 1,000 horsepower automotive powerplants, and sellers of aftermarket parts are more than willing to give sound advice in implementing a plan for a thousand horsepower engine.

Reliability is the key to any engine-building program. With the current availability of hardware and highly tuneable engine-management software, there is no reason for thousand-horsepower engines to a grenade when you mash the throttle to the floor. The basic formula for a 1000-hp V8 is plenty of cubic inches, many boosts, and careful tuning. It is easy to build a very powerful engine. The key is to tune the engine for reliability and longevity so that the labor you expended or paid for and the hard-earned cash you parted with do not go up with a bang. An experience like that can be enough to turn your back on modifying your car for a long time.

If done correctly, a mega-horsepower engine is a thing of joy. For example, a recent LS9-engined Camaro built by Lingenfelter featured a 377 CID block, 8.5:1 compression ratio with forged JE pistons, production GM LS9 crankshaft and titanium connecting rods, LPE CNC ported LS9 cylinder heads with OEM titanium intake valves and sodium-filled hollow stem exhaust valves, GT9 supercharger camshaft, custom fabricated double stacked LS9 intercooler upper manifold, 102 mm billet throttle body, Comp Cams 26918 valve springs, GM LS9 Eaton TVS2300 supercharger, LS9 dry sump oiling system with a custom front mounted dry sump tank, American Racing 2" primary long tube headers and custom open fabricated exhaust with underbody located turn downs. This engine build enabled a street-legal and unlightened latest-generation Camaro to go down the quarter mile in 8.9 seconds. Reportedly, this Camaro had more than 1,200 rear-wheel horsepower. But, you can see that to get to that lofty engine output, many sturdy aftermarket parts had to be used.
