Carrying Out Underfloor Heating Maintenance

Electrical underfloor heating is well known for its reliability.

The ease of installation, lack of water pipes and reduction in general wear and tear means that there is very little that can go wrong with an underfloor heating system.

However, things can go wrong. If you follow these simple steps, your underfloor heating system should give you many years of problem-free, comfortable heat. And if anything does go wrong, problems can be easily located and fixed.

Test, test, test

If you want to minimise the chances of any future problems you should test the heating system before, during and after installation.

Use a multimeter to check the resistance in the system, to ensure a current is going through it and none of the wires have been damaged. Before laying the flooring, switch the system on to ensure it begins to heat up.

Any problems with the system should be revealed at this stage. Once the tests have been passed, and the flooring laid, there is very little chance of the system developing any faults.

Follow the manufacturer's guidelines during installation

You should make sure you follow all instructions if you want to get the most from your underfloor heating.

For example, if you have a concrete sub-floor, you should ensure that adequate insulation I put in place before the heating system is laid.

Otherwise, there will be significant heat loss as the sub-floor will be heated first. As long as the installer follows the manufacturer's guidelines, heat loss should not be an issue.

Tracking down faults
If something does go wrong with your underfloor heating system, faults can be traced quickly and easily. The flooring directly above the fault may need to be lifted, but the rest of the floor can stay in place.

A thermal imaging camera can be used to track down any faults in the system. Faulty cables can then be replaced, with minimal damage to the flooring.

Check the guarantee

Many underfloor heating products will be covered by a life time guarantee, but it makes sense to check the warranty if a fault develops.

Indeed, both the manufacturer and installer may offer a warranty, so you should definitely be covered if anything goes wrong.

Electrical underfloor heating provides a safe, reliable and energy efficient method of heating your home.

By following these simple steps, you should have a problem-free heating system for many years to come.
